David Bayliss

Chief Data Scientist

David Bayliss is Chief Data Scientist, responsible for finding new and creative ways to process Big Data and extract knowledge from it.

David worked with compilers, languages and databases for a decade after leaving university. He was one of the architects behind the HPCC and the initial designer of the ECL Language. Slowly he became convinced that the weak link in software was not the software itself but the way the software was being used. In 2001 David ‘jumped ship’ and created a department dedicated to using ECL; rather than producing it. The department grew and produced many of the data technologies that underpin LexisNexis products and services including the LinkID. Unfortunately with success comes management. David left the burgeoning department to focus back on Data Research; producing several dozen patents and patent applications. Today he is the father of SALT (our Scalable Automated Linking Technology) and is in the process of designing a next generation Knowledge Engineering Language.

Richard Chapman

Vice President of Research and Development

Richard Chapman is the Vice President of Research and Development, responsible for the design and development of the ECL language, compiler, and platforms.

A series of acquisitions and company name changes had Richard working at Clarion, TopSpeed, eData, Seisint and finally LexisNexis. Richard and his team – many of whom have been working together for 15 years or more – first started working on parallel systems using the ECL language and the platforms to support it in 2001.
