HPCC Systems and Academia
For more than a decade, the HPCC Systems Team has collaborated with more than 20 academic institutions around the world to help train and develop the future managers of Big Data projects for Big Data Processing, Big Data Analytics, Big Data Delivery, Compiler Optimization or Programming Language Development.
Faculty, from participating institutions, have leveraged free training classes and materials to learn the platform incorporating it into their curriculum to give their students a competitive edge.
Over the years, we have seen students benefit from learning and working with a platform that was designed from the ground up to manage Big Data. Through this collaboration and internship opportunities, students leveraged free training materials, hands-on exercises and access to the platform to solve real world business problems.
Achievements of our Academic Community
Throughout the years, the HPCC Systems Academic program has been responsible for driving initiatives that resulted in several successful outcomes within our academic community. These can be grouped into the following areas:
- Workshops: Instructors, training material and cloud infrastructure were regularly facilitated in an onsite or remote classroom environment to teach students the fundamentals of Big Data Extraction, Transformation and Load (ETL) with HPCC Systems. See an example of our workshops.
- Hackathons: Support for numerous coding events where students were presented with a Big Data challenge to be solved using HPCC Systems. Mentorship (onsite or remote), cloud infrastructure resources and judging support were regularly facilitated to support these events. Read about one of our hackathons.
- Internship Opportunities: Remote and mentored internships were offered every summer between 2015 and 2024 to students from high school to PhD levels. Over the years, more than 88 students from around the globe had the opportunity to develop their own open source Big Data project using HPCC Systems. View projects developed by previous interns.
- Invitation-only conference: Since 2014, academic partners and members of the community have presented their work at the annual HPCC Systems conference to more than 2,000 online attendees. Learn more about past conferences.
- Curriculum support: Mentorship for faculty staff to leverage HPCC Systems as part of their curriculum allowing students to develop foundational skills for Big Data manipulation, query and analysis. Read about a successful partnership.
- Research support: Throughout the years, HPCC Systems directly supported academic research via more than 130 grants and sponsorships and co-authored almost 80 papers and books with different academic partners around the globe. View a list of academic publications.
