2023 HPCC Systems Community Summit

October 2 – 5, 2023

Save the Date!

We are excited to announce the 10th annual HPCC Systems Community Summit will once again be held virtually this October! This year’s event is free to attend and open to all users of HPCC Systems throughout RELX and the broader open source community. This worldwide event will return to offer plenary and breakout sessions covering a wide variety of topics, a high quality virtual workshop, as well as presentations and technical posters from students working on HPCC Systems related projects. The purpose of the Summit is to gather engineers, data scientists and technology professionals to share knowledge and future roadmap plans for the HPCC Systems platform. This event is dedicated to showcase our community and have industry and academia present their HPCC Systems use cases, research projects and share their experience on how they leverage the HPCC Systems platform.

Call for Presentations
You are cordially invited to participate in our virtual event and submit a speaking proposal to the HPCC Systems Community Virtual Summit. Authors of selected submissions will have the opportunity to present during the event. Speaking proposals could include how HPCC Systems was leveraged in the areas of big data analytics, research and benchmarking, case studies, proof of concepts (POC), data mining and discovery, machine learning and natural language processing methodologies, graph analytics, IoT solutions, cloud computing, getting started or any other use of the HPCC Systems platform. Discuss any observations and/or recommendations to the community. Submissions should be submitted via email.

In your speaking proposal, please include:

  • The proposed title of your presentation
  • A session description of at least 175-300 words. (Presentations will range from 30 – 50 minutes each.)
  • Your name, title, company name/university, and bio, 125-150 words
  • Contact information to include your email address, mailing address and phone number
  • Twitter and blog addresses (if applicable)
  • High resolution headshot image in color (300dpi, 600×900 pixels is preferred)

Tips and Resources for your abstract:

  1. Provide clear objectives and detail about the presentation as possible.
  2. Include not only what your talk will be about but who will benefit from hearing it, what they will learn from it, and any prior knowledge of topics required.
  3. Keep proposals and presentations free of any marketing or sales pitches.
  4. See the agenda and session descriptions from last year to give you an idea.
  5. Watch the presentations from last year as reference.

Poster Presentations Competition
The 8th annual poster presentations competition will be held as part of the Community Virtual Summit, showcasing the work of our academia community on how students leverage the HPCC Systems platform. In addition to the standard categories, the Community Choice Award will return where we have our virtual attendees participate in the voting of their favorite poster. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded as part of the Community Recognition ceremony on Monday October 2, 2023.

View the contest rules for more information and submission instructions.

Virtual ECL Workshop – The 2023 Community ECL Challenge

The HPCC Systems Training and Support team has been very busy this year visiting universities and trade show events to promote HPCC Systems and ECL through Code Days, Hackathons, and Workshops. This year’s Community Summit workshop presents an in-depth look at these events in three 1-hour sessions:

Tuesday, October 3, 2023, 9:00AM – 10:00AM (ET)
Part 1: The “Music is Life!” Workshop

Who doesn’t love music? Take a break from your daily routine datasets and join us in this first hour. We break down a popular open-source music dataset, explore normalizing the dataset and its effects, and look at a variety of data evaluation and query techniques.

Wednesday, October 4, 2023, 9:00AM – 10:00AM (ET)
Part 2: The “Find Your Paradise!” Hackathon

Have you ever thought about building an application that can help people find places to live that maximize their quality of life and happiness?

The goal of this challenge is to analyze different datasets across different categories and correlate them using the HPCC Systems platform. After analyzing, the participants will be asked to design an interface to query this data and assign it a scoring system, then deliver it to the user via ROXIE and show the user where they should most likely want to live. Users should be given choices in an easy-to-use form that when submitted will generate a unique set of scores based on locations.

Thursday, October 5, 2023, 9:00AM – 10:00AM (ET)
Part 3: Better Customer Insights Through Relational Dataset Queries

In this final hour, we look at the power of the open data model, transforming normalized data into a denormalized relational dataset, and use the implicit relationality power to analyze relationships to provide better customer insights.

During the summit week, a workshop cluster will be available with the sample datasets sprayed and ready to use. Code examples will also be available for download for you to examine and modify as needed. This is a virtual workshop event that will also be recorded for your convenience and repeat viewing.

Prerequisites: No prerequisites needed for this event, but it would be helpful if the attendee have a basic understanding of HPCC Systems and ECL. We recommend that you complete our online Introduction to ECL Courses (Part 1 and 2) before attending.

Bob Foreman, Software Engineering Lead, LexisNexis Risk Solutions, has worked with the HPCC Systems platform and ECL for over 12 years and has been a technical teacher for 30 years. He is the lead developer of the HPCC Systems Online Training Courses and is the Senior Instructor for all classroom and remote training.

Virtual Interactive Expo

The Interactive Expo allows attendees to engage with our HPCC Systems experts, seek advice and guidance on new features and platform infrastructure and interact online with our exhibitors.
