A Passion for Learning and Sharing Knowledge
At LexisNexis Risk Solutions, we have a passion for learning and sharing our knowledge with others. And this is not all: we also have a passion for open source software. As part of our open source initiative, we created our HPCC Systems Academic Program to collaborate with universities and higher education institutions around the world to train and develop the future big data and analytics experts. Faculty from these institutions receive free training classes and materials to learn the open source HPCC Systems Big Data platform and its open ECL programming language, and incorporate it into their curriculum. Students benefit from learning and working with a platform that was designed to manage big data by LexisNexis Risk Solutions who has been an industry leader for over a decade.
2017 is turning out to be a banner year for our academic programs and I am excited to announce a few of our highlights today.
The first is our highly anticipated Summer Internship Program. As part of its community portal, HPCC Systems maintains a public list of available projects, designed to be completed by community members and students. These projects cover a wide variety of areas from Web Interfaces, Machine Learning to JAVA programming and more. Undergraduates, masters and PhD students submit proposals indicating the project that they would like to work on and are accepted into the program based on their knowledge of the topic, experience and qualifications. Our mentors and core software developers select those students that submitted the best proposals to participate in our annual summer internship. Typically, we have 4-6 internships every year. I cannot say enough about this program. It allows these young, but many times, very accomplished individuals to work on real-life problems under the guidance of a mentor who will help them in every step of the way. That type of experience is invaluable and will better prepare them for the workplace. This year is special because we are welcoming a high school student onto the team for the very first time!
Mark your calendars! October 4, we are hosting our 4th annual HPCC Systems Summit Community Day which gathers engineers, data scientists and technology professionals to share knowledge and future plans for the HPCC system platform. We are proud that this event not only showcases our community, but that it also serves as an opportunity for our industry and academia partners to present their HPCC Systems use cases, research projects and share their experiences on how they leverage the HPCC Systems platform. This year’s event will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. If you would like to submit a speaking proposal or attend the event, visit the event web page.
As part of Community Day, we will also hold our 2nd annual HPCC Systems Technical Presentations Competition on Tuesday, October 3. This competition showcases the work of our academic community and gives students working on HPCC Systems related projects an opportunity to showcase their work to a wide audience of HPCC Systems open source community members and RELX Group employees. Posters will be on display throughout the HPCC Systems Summit Community Day event. Rules and entry details can be found on the event wiki page.
These programs are all great examples of the innovative work HPCC Systems is doing in education and academia. Please go to Useful Links section now for more information on all of these programs. And we look forward to seeing you in October!
