The Future of Automotive Telemetry: Assessing Autonomous Vehicle Risk Implications using Simulated Data
The idea of self-driving cars has long fascinated mankind, but most thought it was a topic so far-fetched it could only exist in a child’s cartoon. Yet today, this dream is becoming a reality. In fact, industry experts predict by 2024, only six years from now, the majority of travel in major cities will be done by on-demand autonomous vehicles. A KPMG article predicts over the next 30 years autonomous vehicles could shrink the auto industry by 71% or $137 billion dollars. If accurate, that will be a devastating blow to auto companies. And while twenty-one states have already passed or introduced bills relating to self-driving cars, many legal questions remain and will need to be addressed both at the state and federal level.
On April 19, Matthew Upchurch-Butler, Kennesaw State University student and HPCC Systems® Intern, joined our panel for Tech Talk episode 13. During this episode, Matt walked us through a thought provoking presentation on how several companies have taken major strides toward making the once fanciful idea of autonomous vehicles a reality. Yet, as we race closer and closer to that dream, he asks us to stop and pause to consider the risks and challenges that we may be creating for ourselves. Beyond that, he asks us to consider how this new technology will affect today’s modern societal and industrial norm.
Matt is currently a senior at Kennesaw State University majoring in Information Technology with a concentration in Information Security and Assurance. Last year, Kennesaw State University held its first annual Hackathon. The Hackathon featured outside companies with real world problems for the students to work through. Matt partnered with the HPCC Systems team and was named the third-place winner. He joined the LexisNexis family as an intern in February of 2018. Presently, Matt is working to develop a standard Math library for the company’s Enterprise Control Language (ECL).
