LexisNexis supports big data research at Clemson with $70k gift, access to HPCC Systems

CLEMSON — LexisNexis, a global information provider, recently donated a gift of $70,000 to Clemson University to support big data research and analytics, including access to HPCC Systems, the open source big data-processing platform developed by LexisNexis.

Amy Apon, director of the Big Data Systems Lab and chair of the Computer Science Division in Clemson’s School of Computing, is leading the research effort in big data.

“This gift provides significant support for research in big data for Clemson students and research staff,” she said. “Having access to some data products and the HPCC Systems high-quality data analytics environment, along with our growing collaboration with LexisNexis Risk Solution engineers, will enable us to work on some of the most important problems of society.

“Key application areas of big data analytics are intelligent transportation and automotive systems, health analytics and advanced econometrics models that will enable us to make better use of scarce resources.”

HPCC Systems underpins the data services of LexisNexis Risk Solutions, with revenues of $1.4 billion. LexisNexis Risk Solutions creates data, risk, analytics and anti-fraud solutions for customers in the financial services, government, health care, insurance and retail industries.

“We are proud to work with a prestigious institution like Clemson University,” said Flavio Villanustre, vice president of technology, LexisNexis. “This collaboration is another indication of our commitment to furthering research and breakthroughs in the Big Data analytics space. We are pleased to offer our Open Source Big Data HPCC Systems technology as a catalyst for improving the quality of data science.

“As we expand our Academic Program to include more universities and research institutions, our goal is to help society tackle the technology challenges of the next decade.”

Apon and members of the Big Data Systems lab will be speaking at the upcoming HPCC Systems Summit in October.
